Founded in 1928, HHI ( is one of the leading laboratories worldwide with emphasis on InP-based discrete and PIC devices as well as polymer-based PLCs and optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEIC). In its Photonics Components (PC) department HHI has successfully developed a wide range of photonic devices, in many cases in close cooperation with domestic and foreign SMEs and large companies. These include, among others, Mach Zehnder-Modulators, 90° Hybrids for coherent detection, THz transmitters and receivers, micro-ring resonators for biomedical applications, and novel polymer-based components for communications and sensorics. HHI has long-standing experience with European Projects carried out in the ESPRIT, RACE-I/II, ACTS, IST and ICT programmes as well as national programmes (PHOTONIK-I/II, KomNet, MultiTeraNet, BOOM, Eibone, 100GET, MIRTHE, POLYSYS, APACHE, EuroPIC, PARADIGM, PANTHER, HAMLET, and 3PEAT). In 2002 HHI became a member of the Fraunhofer Society, which focuses on applied research of direct utility to private and public enterprises and of wide benefit to society.

Role in the project
HHI will provide its polymer-waveguide-based photonic integration platform PolyBoard within UNIQORN. Within WP2 it will define integration methodology to be used for the quantum system-on-chip co-integration. In WP4 HHI will fabricate PolyBoards tailored to the needs of the quantum-optics applications. It will integrate bulk optical components into the photonic integrated circuit by means of its on-chip micro-optical bench. The fabricated components will be fiber-coupled by HHI and delivered to the partners as optical sub-assemblies for further integration in WP5, where HHI assists in the quantum circuit co-integration.
